Anyone who thinks that Speed Racer (2008) utterly sucks, let me know so I can remove you from my f-list.

Halfway thru ANOTHER DVD viewing, and I am still CONSISTENTLY impressed by story ideas, sfx, and occasional acting.

This movie (like Popeye and Flash Gordon) is better than you snarkily think it is.

I don't know if it has the culty glow of Big Trouble in Little China or Hudson Hawk to it as of yet.

But it is good. At least, to me.

Tell you what. You don't drop me for not liking that headache-inducing bundle of sound and fury signifying nothing, and I won't drop you for your inexplicable deficiencies concerning the bard of Providence, m'kay?

You're wrong, but ok. Pax.

I think it's safe to say that Speed Racer goes well beyond utterly sucking; it's a perfect black void of cinema where even infinitesimal quantities of talent, genuine creative effort, and artistic value are entirely absent.

And I'm not on your f-list in the first place, so...HA!

See, know, your opinion means less than nothing to me, so, I lose nothing in this sitch.

I Still have the soundtrack on my iPod.

Thank you very much.

Ok - having been an avid fan of the cartoon for sooo long - I can tell you that I ADORED the movie. I felt that it did a great justice to the cartoon, and was a good representation of what live-action-animae would look like.

I felt that the movie was well cast, the actors pulled off what the characters in the cartoon were. John Goodman as Pops for example, was brilliant. Matthew Fox also did a good job of bringing Racer X to life (especially, since his face matched the relative profile also done in the cartoon.). I thought the representations of the cars were also brilliant.

Did they take liberties with creating this movie? Of course they did. But I feel that they kept with the spirit of what Speed Racer is.

To the naysayers - all I'm going to say is, let's agree to disagree m'kay? I know there are people that feel you can get the same sensation by tossing a bunch of lightbulbs in a clothes dryer and get the same effect. That is their opinion - and that's ok..rilly.

Actually, tossing a bunch of light bulbs in the dryer sounds like it might be kinda fun. My lovely and talented spouse would have my head if I tried it, of course, but even so...

I'm quite fond of the movie, and have been since I saw it in IMAX on it's original release. It's just a fair bit wierder than people are willin' to put up with, I guess.

Item a: you frequently state your opinions as facts. That does not mean you are mistaken.
item b: I feel the same way about the Phantom movie. ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117331/ )

The PHANTOM movie is MUCH BETTER than people claim it to be. I enjoy it, intensely.

Speed Racer was absolutely fantastic. I spread the word after I saw it and was ignored by pretty much everyone. Fools. I've found that most of the people I've met who say they didn't like it or thought it looked stupid either never bothered to watch it or hate fun.
From: yojimbob Date: July 18th, 2009 09:40 am (UTC) (Link)
Speed Racer, Josie and the Pussycats, Hudson Hawk... All brilliant to be sure. And yet, they pale compared to:

"And go off and rule the universe from beyond the grave?"
"Or check into a psycho ward, whichever comes first, huh pal?"

I ask, is there a better, more intensely quotable, movie than Big Trouble in Little China? Is there any force more powerful than Kurt Russel's swagger?

"I'd go in there with you, but --"
"I know. There's a problem with your face."

Bergman wishes he'd ever written anything that good. ;)
samldanach From: samldanach Date: July 18th, 2009 11:01 am (UTC) (Link)
Princess Bride is more intensely quotable. And, for my money, better. However, it is no shame to come in #2 to PB. BTiLC is still more quotable than Star Wars or Serenity, so that's the league it's in.

"Black blood of the earth." "You mean oil?" "NO! I mean black blood of the earth!"

"The Chinese have a lot of hells."

Why do I not have a BTiLC icon?

OK, clearly I will have to watch Speed Racer again. I was underwhelmed the first time I saw it. I do not think it utterly sucks, I just don't think it brought the magic.

(To the people who thought it over the top, bizarre, or slightly silly, you clearly did not watch the original show, either. That's like the people who bitch about the new Star Trek relying on technobabble instead of hard science. You're in the wrong fandom.)

I know I need to watch Popeye again. I should go put it on my Amazon list right now.

I, personally, thought captured the feel and spirit of the original Speed Racer, and thoroughly enjoyed this piece of wonderful flickery.

I totally downloaded the soundtrack the moment I got home after seeing it. See, I don't think it was a good movie, not exactly. I do think it was a hell of a lot of fun. I think it was ingenious as hell. I think it will have a long lasting visual impact, because, frankly, the damned thing was gorgeous and impressive.

My only problem with it was the occasionally Wachowskian dialogue that made me want to hurl. But considering how much fun the rest of it was, I didn't care.

Speed Racer was my favorite movie of 2008!

I can seriously watch that flick over and over again.

(I also totally dig Popeye, but I can't go with you on Flash Gordon, alas.)

Focus on the supporting characters, those actors' performances, and the production design.

I love Speed Racer! I am sorry I didn't see it in the theaters. As exhilirating as it was on my tiny TV, I can only imagine how awesome it is on the big screen.

The first 1/2 hour covers an awful lot of ground clearly, efficiently, and with tons and tons of style.
chaosclockwork From: chaosclockwork Date: July 18th, 2009 06:27 pm (UTC) (Link)
Haven't gotten around to seeing it, but that's due to my knee-jerk reflexes - I hear names that rhyme with 'Zachowski Smuthers' and immediately my mouth shouts out 'pretentious HACKS!!!' Whether or not they deserve this abuse, I leave up to debate. Admittedly, I've never seen the old series, either.

However, I've heard multiple people say it was good. And among these people are plenty of old-school fans of the original series, which is what I use as my main criteria of 'is this good?'. So, I assume that it is a rocking-good movie, and wait patiently for a chance to see it for free (which is pretty much the only way I see anything these days).

I haven't had the opportunity to see Speed Racer yet, but I liked Popeye and Flash Gordon, so I see no reason to pre-judge Speed Racer.

I saw the previews and was sure it would be terrible. When my son wanted to watch it, I gave in and bought it. I sat down to watch it because I had nothing better to do. I settled in and got ready to make fun of it... and loved it. Never saw the original series, but it was just damn fun.

I think I saw it three times that week. I made my brother watch it--he liked it. I made my wife watch it... not so much.

I loved Popeye, too. Never saw Flash Gordon or Josie and the Pussycats.
